I’m 30 and I just tried my first fresh fig. There were so many things I didn’t know when Karina put a bowl of figs in front of me after her Rosh Hashanah dinner. Can you eat them fresh or only dried? Can you eat the skin? Are there pits?
Turns out, yes, you can eat them fresh – skin and all. And they’re good! Not overly sweet and not too mushy (when the proper ripeness). And this green variety with it’s deep coral flesh is so pretty. I simply sliced the figs and then drizzled with a balsamic glaze I found at Trader Joe’s. You could always make your own glaze by simply reducing balsamic vinegar til it’s nice and syrupy. It’s sweet but has a slight salty tang that works well with the figs. It’s the perfect dessert for someone who doesn’t have a huge sweet tooth or a great guilt-free snack while being lazy in front of the tv (at least, it’s healthier than the buttered popcorn I stuffed into my pie hole the previous three nights).
